Item Description
Stamp Evaluation – Scott #C7 (Unused, Hinged, Original Gum – Single Stamp)10¢ Blue – Map of U.S. with Biplanes, 1926
(U.S. Airmail Issue – Flat Plate Printing, Perf 11)
Design Overview:
Scott #C7 was issued in 1926 as part of the U.S. Airmail series. The design depicts a map of the continental United States with biplanes flying east and west, symbolizing the expansion of transcontinental airmail service. “UNITED STATES POSTAGE” is inscribed at the top with “AIR MAIL” in bold letters below it, while “10 CENTS” is displayed prominently at the bottom corners. Printed in blue by flat plate intaglio methods, the issue is perforated 11 on all sides.
This example is unused, hinged, and retains original gum.
Grading Breakdown:
Centering Grade: 79 (Fine/Very Fine – F/VF)
The stamp has balanced margins with perforations well clear of the design. The top margin is the narrowest, followed by the right. The bottom is the widest, while the left margin is more generous than the right. This distribution qualifies as Fine/Very Fine centering under the 2009 PSE Grading Guide.
Soundness Evaluation:
The stamp exhibits a hinge remnant, light ink transfer on the reverse, and a small area of paper adhesion. These constitute two very minor faults and one extremely minor fault. Together, they qualify as a Minor Fault.
Soundness Deduction: –20 points
Perforations and Margins:
The stamp is perforated 11 on all sides, consistent with the issue. The perforations are intact and evenly punched, with no evidence of trimming or reperforation. Margins reflect the centering grade, tightest at top and right, more generous at left and bottom.
Cancellation Evaluation:
This is an unused example and bears no cancellation.
Collector’s Note:
As an unused airmail issue, the absence of cancellation preserves the bold blue engraving and map detail. Hinged examples are less desirable than never hinged, but remain collectible when well-centered.
Eye Appeal Adjustment:
The color is strong and vibrant, with crisp engraving throughout. The minor faults are confined to the reverse and do not affect the stamp’s face. No adjustment is necessary for eye appeal.
Final Numerical Grade Calculation:
Centering Grade: 79 (Fine/Very Fine)
Soundness Deduction: –20 (Minor Faults: hinge remnant, ink transfer, paper adhesion)
Adjusted Base Grade: 59
Eye Appeal Adjustment: 0
Final Grade: 59 (Very Good – VG)
Final Summary:
Scott Number: C7
Condition: Unused, Hinged, Original Gum
Centering: 79 (Fine/Very Fine)
Soundness: Minor Fault (hinge remnant, ink transfer, paper adhesion)
Perforations: Perf 11, intact and consistent with the issue
Cancellation: None (unused example)
Eye Appeal: Strong color and impression, no deduction
Final Grade: 59 (Very Good – VG)
Final Verdict:
This unused, hinged example of Scott #C7 displays Fine/Very Fine centering, intact perforations, and strong blue color. Its grade is reduced by a hinge remnant, light ink transfer, and a small paper adhesion on the reverse, resulting in a final grade of 59 (Very Good). It remains a collectible example of the issue under the 2009 PSE Grading Guide.
