Item Description
United States, Scott #1241, used(o), 1963, Third Stamp in the American Paintings Series, stamp honors John James Audubon (1785-1851), American ornithologist and artist and shows his painting of what he saw and labeled to be a pair of ‘Columbia Jays’ (which have been correctly classified as Collie Magpies); Audubon was a French-American self-trained artist, naturalist, and ornithologist; his combined interests in art and ornithology turned into a plan to make a complete pictorial record of all the bird species of North America; he was notable for his extensive studies documenting all types of American birds and for his detailed illustrations, which depicted the birds in their natural habitats; his major work, a color-plate book titled ‘The Birds of America (1827-1839)' is considered one of the finest ornithological works ever completed; 5 cents, engraved and Giori Press printed by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing (BEP), perforated at scale: 11, phosphorus tagged paper, (stamp should not be confused with 1967 air mail stamp, Scott #C71, of similar design but with value 20 cents), dark blue and multicolored, Scott 2025 Catalog Value: 25¢, nicely centered (superb), crisp, three-quarter circular, red-inked, double-rimmed, quarter clockwise turned, socked-on-the-nose cancel with considerable mailing details centered down and right from middle and extending over most of the front of the stamp and well into the main image, sound back, good perforations. This is not a 'bait-and-switch;' the stamp you see will be the one you receive. Please review my terms of sale. If you are not ordering from the United States, there is a $US1.65 additional postage expense that needs to be added to the price of the stamp. If you are ordering from the United States, there is only a $US0.73 added postage expense. Also, if you make additional purchases from my offerings, they can all go in one mailing at no extra shipping expense for the added purchases. I will send the purchase by US first class mail, since the relatively low value of the stamp does not warrant signature or tracking mail. Hence the buyer assumes risk of loss or non-delivery. I will keep a scan of my mailing to verify that the correct mailing address was used.
By way of reference, I am an American Philatelic Society member (195176) and an American Stamp Dealers Association (ASDA) member. Thank you for looking, and I hope this is the perfect stamp to fill that gap in your collection.
