Item Description
United States, Scott #2228, used(o) coil, 1986, Transportation Definitive Series, re-engraved third issue of 1986; the Transportation series ran for 14 years, in five major issues and several re-engraved issues, with 59 individual stamps showing early American forms of transport in the widest sense ( ... from dog sleds, to baby carriages, to apartment elevators), this stamp is a smaller, re-engraved version of the 1982 stamp (Scott #1898A) of the same design; the stamp header measures 17¾mm versus 19½mm of the original; stamp shows a Stage Coach of the 1890s; prior to the coming of the railroad and automobile, your choice of transport between cities in the United States was by horseback or by one of these stage coaches; during the 1700s and 1800s, the stagecoach traveled along regular routes carrying passengers and mail; regularly scheduled lines were established in colonial America as early as 1756 between the chief cities of Boston, New York, and Philadelphia; other routes were gradually added on the east coast and they followed the western expansion; the western stage coach, pursued by bandits or native American raiding parties, with the driver whipping his team and the ‘shotgun’ with the strong box at his feet blasting away at the raiders, was standard fare for our western movies and TV shows; eventually, railroads took the place of this popular form of transportation; engraved and issued in coils of 3,000 stamps by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, the 4 cent issue value had the stamp used as make-up stamps for higher value mailings and as the standard rate for five-digit, non-profit, presorted mailings; perforations at scale: 10 vertical, imperforated at top and bottom, perforations either torn or guillotine cut by the customer at the sides (IPIP), reddish brown; Scott 2025 Catalog Value: 25¢, slightly off-centered (very fine) which is good for coil stamps as most are considerably off-centered, no visible cancellation which is typical for a non-profit mailing as most non-profit mail bypasses the automatic cancellation machines, sound back, customer torn and balanced perforations, one short perforation at right side up from middle and again on the left side up from middle, otherwise all good perforations; reasonable centering, smaller size re-issue, and cancel free image warrants a selling price premium. This is not a 'bait-and-switch;' the stamp you see will be the one you receive. Please review my terms of sale. If you are not ordering from the United States, there is a $US1.65 additional postage expense that needs to be added to the price of the stamp. If you are ordering from the United States, there is only a $US0.73 added postage expense. Also, if you make additional purchases from my offerings, they can all go in one mailing at no extra shipping expense for the added purchases. I will send the purchase by US first class mail, since the relatively low value of the stamp does not warrant signature or tracking mail. Hence the buyer assumes risk of loss or non-delivery. I will keep a scan of my mailing to verify that the correct mailing address was used.
By way of reference, I am an American Philatelic Society member (195176) and an American Stamp Dealers Association (ASDA) member. Thank you for looking, and I hope this is the perfect stamp to fill that gap in your collection.
