Item Description
United States, Scott #2256 (Michel #2024)(Yvert&Tellier #PR12)(Stanley Gibbons #2167b), used(o), 1988 coil, Pre-cancelled stamp in the Transportation Series Definitives; the Transportation series ran for 14 years, in five major issues and several re-engraved issues, with 59 individual stamps showing early American forms of transport in the widest sense ( ... from dog sleds, to baby carriages, to apartment building elevators), this stamp, from the fourth issue, shows a Police Patrol Wagon of the 1880s, the USPS did not hire an artist to create the artwork for this stamp; instead, the post office project manager used an original engraving from the magazine ‘The Carriage Monthly’ of 1885-86; the police wagon was introduced in Chicago in 1879; the canopied, horse-drawn wagons were designed to get policemen from their station house out to their patrol routes, and might also be used to escort prisoners back to the station or to a jail; the stamps were issued in coils of 500 and 3,000 pre-cancelled stamps for the first class mail rate for post cards of 13 cents, perforated 10 vertical (imperforated at top and bottom, customer torn or cut perforations at the sides), not phosphorus tagged, no watermark, engraved by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing and pre-cancelled in red for its designated customers, black with red pre-cancel, Scott 2025 Catalog Value: 25¢, very slightly off-centered (extremely fine) which is very good for a coil stamp as most are considerably off-centered, a used stamp with no visible cancellation as is typical for this category of stamp as its use by-passed the automatic cancelling machines, sound back, perforations close clipped at the left though cut evenly at the right leaves the stamp somewhat unbalanced in perforations, centering, cancel free image, and relative scarcity of the issue warrants a selling price premium. This is not a 'bait-and-switch;' the stamp you see will be the one you receive. Please review my terms of sale. If you are not ordering from the United States, there is a $US1.65 additional postage expense that needs to be added to the price of the stamp. If you are ordering from the United States, there is only a $US0.73 added postage expense. Also, if you make additional purchases from my offerings, they can all go in one mailing at no extra shipping expense for the added purchases. I will send the purchase by US first class mail, since the relatively low value of the stamp does not warrant signature or tracking mail. Hence the buyer assumes risk of loss or non-delivery. I will keep a scan of my mailing to verify that the correct mailing address was used.
By way of reference, I am an American Philatelic Society member (195176) and an American Stamp Dealers Association (ASDA) member. Thank you for looking, and I hope this is the perfect stamp to fill that gap in your collection.
