Item Description
United States, Scott #3166, used(o), 1997, Bicentennial commemorative of the life and achievements of Padre Félix Valera (1788-1853); a Cuban-American priest, educator, and social reformer; in Cuba, Varela was the leading educator, philosopher and patriot of his time - he taught Philosophy, Chemistry, Physics, Theology and Music; any future Cuban leaders were his students. He argued for giving women the same education as men; in 1821 Varela was elected to the Spanish Cortes (the legislature), and he recommended that Spanish colonies in Latin America be considered independent; he also asked for Cuban self-rule and an end to slavery; in 1823, the Spanish Crown condemned him to death for his pro-revolution influence, but he escaped and made his way to New York; he was assigned to a parish in New York in the Irish section, and even though there were many racial/ethnic problems at the time, he became a defender of immigrant rights and of the poor Irish immigrants; he led his ministry as priest for over 25 years; in 1824 he began to publish an independent journal: El Habanero, which ran for 7 issues and was regularly smuggled into Cuba; he became Vicar General of the Diocese of New York in 1837; at that time, this title also covered the whole state of New York and New Jersey; currently, Varela is being considered for canonization as a Catholic saint; 25¢, lithography printed, perforated 11.2, purple, Scott 2019 catalog value: 25¢. Off-centered, large, half circular, red-inked, double-rimmed, socked-on-the-nose cancellation over the top half of the stamp and into the main image, sound back, good perforations. This is not a 'bait-and-switch;' the stamp you see will be the one you receive. Please review my terms of sale. If you are not ordering from the United States, there is a $US1.45 additional postage expense that needs to be added to the price of the stamp. If you are ordering from the United States, there is only a $US0.63 added postage expense. Also, if you make additional purchases from my offerings, they can all go in one mailing at no extra shipping expense for the added purchases. I will send the purchase by US first class mail, since the relatively low value of the stamp does not warrant signature or tracking mail. Hence the buyer assumes risk of loss or non-delivery. I will keep a scan of my mailing to verify that the correct mailing address was used.
By way of reference, I am an American Philatelic Society member (195176) and an American Stamp Dealers' Association (ASDA) member. Thank you for looking, and I hope this is the perfect stamp to fill that gap in your collection.
