Item Description
United States, Scott #4439, used(o), 2010, American Landmarks Series, stamp shows the Bixby Creek Bridge, the 1932 Art Deco bridge on the Big Sur coast of California, 13 miles south of Carmel on California State Route 1 - the Pacific Coast Highway; built during the Great Depression, the bridge designers chose a reinforced concrete bridge so they could employ more labor, have a higher wage bill, and yet reduce total costs; in addition, the color would match the surrounding natural rock formations and it would create a bridge that would fit in the landscape - they succeeded - the bridge was built for just under $200,000 - and it has become one of the most photographed bridges in California due to its aesthetic design, graceful period architecture and magnificent setting - (for two interesting footnotes: 1) the bridge underwent a mandatory seismic retrofit in 1998-2000 at a cost, in keeping with the two's and zero's on 1932, of $20,000,000 and 2) even after the expensive refit, the bridge is still officially classified as ‘functionally obsolete’ because at 24 feet in width, the bridge is less than the 32 feet standard required of newly built bridges); express mail rate of $18.30, photogravure printed by Avery Dennison, issued with non-water soluble self-adhesive panes, serpentine die cut simulated perforations: 10¾x10½, multi-colored, Scott 2025 Catalog Value: $18.00; very slightly off-centered (extremely fine), double strike cancelled, both large, circular, red-inked, single-rimmed, socked-on-the-nose cancellations, the main, a nearly full circle, hollowed-out cancel centered left and up from the middle and extending out over most of the upper left half of the stamp, the second, smaller, quarter circular on the lower left corner, stamp has several horizontal surface wrinkles caused when the customer incorrectly placed the stamp on the mailing parcel, hence price considered, good perforations, stamp was lifted from its mailing envelope using the Bestine solvent and placed on a piece of black trimmed card stock for an attractive and uniform album appearance with other stamps from the period similarly mounted; centering and mounting warrants a selling price premium, but surface problems calls for an adjustment, so a wash, This is not a 'bait-and-switch;' the stamp you see will be the one you receive. Please review my terms of sale. If you are not ordering from the United States, there is a $US1.65 additional postage expense that needs to be added to the price of the stamp. If you are ordering from the United States, there is only a $US0.73 added postage expense. Also, if you make additional purchases from my offerings, they can all go in one mailing at no extra shipping expense for the added purchases. I will send the purchase by US first class mail, since the relatively low value of the stamp does not warrant signature or tracking mail. Hence the buyer assumes risk of loss or non-delivery. I will keep a scan of my mailing to verify that the correct mailing address was used.
By way of reference, I am an American Philatelic Society member (195176) and an American Stamp Dealers Association (ASDA) member. Thank you for looking, and I hope this is the perfect stamp to fill that gap in your collection.
