Item Description
United States, Scott #4999, used(o), 2015, Eastern Tiger Swallowtail Butterfly, non-machinable surcharge stamp; surcharge represents an additional postage charge by USPS on First-Class Mail letters that do not fit through the automated postal service processing system and need be hand-canceled by USPS staff, this is the fifth stamp in the series with the butterfly theme, a theme well coordinated with the greeting card industry, its largest feeder industry for this series of stamps; stamp shows the male Eastern Tiger Swallowtail butterfly; in 1587, colonist and artist John White depicted the Eastern tiger swallowtail while accompanying Sir Walter Raleigh’s third expedition to the New World; it was the first butterfly known to have been documented in the United States; it is one of the most common butterflies in North America; it is also one of the largest. Its wingspan can measure up to five and a half inches across and differs greatly in color from the female of the species; from spring until fall, gardens, forests and meadows across the Eastern United States are dappled with these light yellow tiger-striped butterflies; issued as a forever stamp at a counter issue value of 71 cents; serpentine die cut simulated perforations: 10½, offset lithography printed by Ashton Potter USA (APU); ‘USPS’ in horizontal black microprint on the bottom extension of the yellow right wing in the middle of the stamp, issued with non-water soluble adhesive sheets of 120 in panes of 20; multicolored, Scott 2025 catalog value: 25¢, nicely centered (superb), crisp, quarter circular, red-inked, double-rimmed, three-quarters clockwise turned, socked-on-the-nose corner cancellation at the lower right and just into the main image, good perforations, stamp was lifted from the mailing envelope using the Bestine solvent and placed on a piece of black trimmed card stock for an attractive and uniform album appearance with other stamps of the period similarly mounted; centering, mounting, and largely image clear cancel warrants a selling price premium. This is not a 'bait-and-switch;' the stamp you see will be the one you receive. Please review my terms of sale. If you are not ordering from the United States, there is a $US1.65 additional postage expense that needs to be added to the price of the stamp. If you are ordering from the United States, there is only a $US0.73 added postage expense. Also, if you make additional purchases from my offerings, they can all go in one mailing at no extra shipping expense for the added purchases. I will send the purchase by US first class mail, since the relatively low value of the stamp does not warrant signature or tracking mail. Hence the buyer assumes risk of loss or non-delivery. I will keep a scan of my mailing to verify that the correct mailing address was used.
By way of reference, I am an American Philatelic Society member (195176) and an American Stamp Dealers Association (ASDA) member. Thank you for looking, and I hope this is the perfect stamp to fill that gap in your collection.
