United States, Scott #1859, used(o), 1980, Great Americans Series, stamp shows Sequoyah (c1770-1843), Native American of the Cherokee Nation; in 1921, using English, Greek, and Hebrew symbols, he created an alphabet for the Cherokee language that enabled thousands of other Cherokees to read and write; in 1824, he translated parts of the Bible, and four years later, he established the first weekly Cherokee newspaper; his achievement was one of the few times in recorded history that an individual member of a pre-literate group created an original, effective writing system; his creation of the written vocabulary turned the Cherokee nation into one of the first North American indigenous groups with a written language, the people of the Cherokee Nation rapidly began to use his written vocabulary and officially adopted it in 1825; it unified a forcibly divided nation with new ways of communication and a sense of independence, by the 1850s, their literacy rate reached almost 100 percent, surpassing that of their surrounding European-American neighbors; 19¢, engraved and printed by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing (BEP), perforated: 11x10½, brown, Scott 2025 Catalog Value: 25¢, slightly off-centered (very fine), double strike cancels, the main, a large, light, three-quarter circular, red-inked, double-rimmed, broken-up and hollowed-out, quarter counter-clockwise turned, socked-on-the-nose, cancellation centered at the upper left and extendng out over most of the front of the stamp, the second cancel is a circular touch cancel at the lower right, the lightness of the main cancel, and its hollowed-out effect leaves the main image remarkable clear, sound back, good perforations. This is not a 'bait-and-switch;' the stamp you see will be the one you receive.
