United states stampless letter bangor maine 1849 james crosby f950ummary of the letterthis is a three-page family letter dated august 30, 1844, from mary ann crosby in bangor, maine, to her brother, james crosby, who was temporarily in boston. The letter's primary subject is the declining health of james's wife, charlotte. Mary reports that charlotte, who has been very ill with no appetite, has shown some slight improvement after taking an emetic. However, the doctor's prognosis is grim, as he does not believe the improvement will be permanent. The letter also contains other family news, mentioning their parents, children, and acquaintances, and discusses travel plans that have been altered due to charlotte's condition. Written less than two months before charlotte's death, the letter provides a poignant glimpse into her final illness. The sender: mary ann crosbyname: mary ann crosby (signing the letter as "mary").Location: bangor, maine.Relationship to receiver: she is the sister of james crosby.Biographical information: mary ann crosby was born in 1811 and died in 1896. August. 30thdear sisteryour letter from niagara, was received this morning - am glad you are having so pleasant a time - however, had supposed that when you got either of the three letters, i sent to troy, that you would give up the plan of having the boys come to brunswick - therefore, unless something else is heard suppose they had better not go - i have told george ever since you went, that i thought it very probable that charlotte, would wish to have you come home, before that time; for a week past he has given up going, and saw the propriety of your not remaining. C. Is in many respects much better for a few days past - she took an emetic a few days since, which benefitted her very much. Her stomach had been in such a state that she had no appetite. Her appetite is now pretty good and she does not lose strength. The doctor said this morning she was very comfortable indeed i was there this forenoon - he wished me to say to you that she felt she was getting better - but still she wished you to be at home, on many accounts. As to the getting better, you know how it is in such cases - it may be so, but it has not been the doctors that it would be, permanently - he has taken as much care of charlotte as if she had been onepage 2of his own family - if you feel any regret about not being home sooner - it is to be considered that it has been very thick rainy weather, until today for a week - and you would not have wished to come in the boat - neither could c. Have been removed come if you had wished to do that. Father & mother came in the stage from bruns. Monday & tuesday - mrs prentiss put the house in order and i keep things going, very well. I have neither seen or heard anything of the aunt - very trifling that a mr. Freeman and mr ellis came here once or twice. The rain prevented us calling coming. Mr. Crosby's mother is quite comfortable i believe i told you she had been sick - understanding they were in expectation of seeing you at brunswick i have thot of writing to them but you would not come - but when sarah hingle did not know but you would leave sarah there so have not said anything about it. James has been a good boy and perfectly well. George & johny have too been very well minded and have done as well as they could. There have been quite a number of occasions of some interest to them.Page 3i just had a note from charlotte in which she says that if she should remove home it would be exceedingly pleasant to her to have miss dana come and stay with her - if her cough should continue she shall feel the need of having some friend with her, and she wants to see miss dana so much that it really makes her uncomfortable - i have known all along, that she felt very much, about those things, as she did last spring. But she never has said anything about it directly, before.
