Item Description

Carefully selected from a specialized postal history collection, this registered airmail cover was sent from Montevideo, Uruguay, in 1946 to Monsieur Georges Thélin, Secretary General of the Union Internationale de Secours aux Enfants (UISE), at 43 Quai Wilson, Geneva, Switzerland.

1️⃣ Philatelic: Franked with a mixed franking of Uruguayan issues (including airmail and definitive values), and carried by registered airmail. Postmarks show clear transit and arrival markings in Geneva (10.XI.46).

2️⃣ Historical / Institutional: Georges Thélin (1890-1963) was a prominent Swiss Protestant intellectual, pacifist and activist. He played a central role in international humanitarian work with the UISE, directly linked to the League of Nations and later the United Nations system in Geneva.

3️⃣ Social / Feminist dimension: Beyond his humanitarian role for childhood relief, Thélin was also an active feminist campaigner in Switzerland, advocating women’s suffrage from the 1920s onward, and collaborating with the Swiss Women’s Societies Alliance.
