Item Description

16 June 1836 folded letter from US Ship Captain, Daniel L. Winsor undergoing Quarantine in Elsinore, Denmark. The captain and his ship travelled eight weeks from Havana to Denmark. He wrote that today the Quarantine ends and he would go ashore to clear the ship. Two page letter written in English, and after clearing the ship he goes to St Petersburg, Russia with his cargo. Scarce complete letter with forwarding agent's endorsement on reverse (unlisted in Rowe forwarding agents markings). Sent to Boston, and rated 12 cents on arrival. Possibly disinfected in Denmark or on arrival. This was mailed during one of the large Cholera epidemics. First page of letter scanned.
