Item Description

This stamp has never been mounted in a collection. It has perforation issues and a straight right side. The obliterator appears to have been a hand-carved cork design. This and one other copy of this design were found among the thousands of Scott 219, 219D and 220 stamps collected from businesses at Union City, Indiana. Although some stamps may have been collected across the state line in Union City, Ohio, I have found no evidence of that. The stamps accompanied 11-12,000 cut squares. Most of the readable postmarks are from 1891 to 1893, with the majority from 1892. The material was bundled or boxed in a manner that left most of it very well protected from damage and aging for over a century.

Although mail was coming to Union City from all over the country, much of it seemed to be coming from small cities and towns in Indiana and Ohio and to a lesser degree from smaller communities in other nearby states. In other words, most of the fancy and geometric cancels probably originated within 150 to 200 miles of Union City. Many of the cut squares have partial circular date stamps that identify the post offices associated with the accompanying obliterator designs. That is rarely the case with the stamps and the post office of origin for this one remains a mystery.
