Item Description

This stamp is Scott number 220. The unusual obliterator is a keystone design filled with a grid pattern. The stamp is fairly well centered, but has perf problems at the top. The black and white image is of a stamp I sold several years ago. It shows a more complete example of this obliterator design. The origin of this cancellation is unknown.

This stamp is one of 16 with this obliterator design that I found among thousands of off-paper stamps and cut squares collected from businesses at Union City, Indiana, in the early 1890s. Most of the readable postmarks in the hoard are from 1891 to 1893. The stamps had been soaked from the envelopes around the time of their collection. The stamps and cut squares were then sorted and tied tightly with string and sewing thread into bundles of 100 each. None of these sale items from the hoard has ever been in a collection.

Some of the cut squares in the Union City hoard have partial circular date stamps that identify the post offices associated with the accompanying obliterator designs. Unfortunately, the post office of origin for this unique design remains a mystery.

Although mail was coming to Union City from all over the country via three railroads, much of it seemed to be coming from small cities and towns in Indiana and Ohio and to a lesser degree from smaller communities in other nearby states. In other words, most of the fancy and geometric cancels probably originated within 150 to 200 miles of Union City.
