Item Description

This stamp has a wide negative “A” cancel. It is one of a handful of similar cancels from a very large hoard.

This stamp has never been mounted in a collection. It was among several thousand stamps collected and bound by string and thread in bundles containing 100 stamps each. They were collected from businesses at Union City, Indiana, and possibly across the state line in Union City, Ohio, in the early 1890s. The stamps accompanied 11-12,000 similarly bundled cut squares and all were probably bundled at the time of their collection. The vast majority of the material was very well protected from damage and aging for over a century.

Most of the readable postmarks are from 1891 to 1893, with the majority from 1892. Although mail was coming to Union City from all over the country, much of it seemed to be coming from small cities and towns in Indiana and Ohio and to a lesser degree from smaller communities in other nearby states. In other words, most of the fancy and geometric cancels were from the states surrounding Union City.

The origin of this cancel is unknown, but the Sol Salkind and James Cole books on fancy cancels include examples of this type. The Cole book includes specific examples from Crawfordsville, Indiana, and Auburn, New York. My cut square hoard also includes a negative “A” cancel from Converse, Indiana. The Crawfordsville version is similar to this copy, but the Converse version is much narrower.
