Item Description
This stamp is nicely centered and has good color, but has a short perforation tooth at the bottom. The "broken hat" variety exists in a few different forms that show the progressive enlargement of the break. This example is unusual in that it shows the full break, but the break area is filled rather than open as is usually the case. This stamp has never been mounted in a collection. It was among a few thousand copies of Scott 231 that were packed tightly into circa 1900 Clark O.N.T. sewing thread boxes. These and many thousands of other common stamps and cut squares had been collected from businesses at Union City, Indiana, in the early 1890s. All the stamps were off paper. Most of the material was bundled or boxed in a manner that left most of it very well protected from damage and aging for over a century. Although some of the material may have been collected across the state line in Union City, Ohio, I have found no evidence of that.
Although mail was coming to Union City from cities all over the country, much of the mail seemed to be coming from small cities and towns in Indiana and Ohio, and to a lesser degree from similar communities in other nearby states. In other words, most of the identifiable fancy and geometric cancels originated in Indiana, Ohio and the surrounding states. Several post offices used this obliterator and the originating post office has not been identified.

- Shipping Instructions
- About 3½ years ago, I stopped selling and shipping outside the US due to new postal rules and rapidly rising costs. The USPS is raising postal rates again in January 2019. Today, December 25, 2018, due to the continuing rise in the cost of postage and associated fees, I am reluctantly raising my general shipping fee for the first time in many years. My sales here at HipStamp involve no additional charge for the purchase of multiple stamps. Shipping is via USPS unless otherwise specified. Be sure to contact me before making your purchases if you have questions.
