About my scans with the light background:  I recently changed from using black Vario pages to transparent pages.  This reduces the handling of stamps to scan the backs and provides truer color.  My new scanner was under-exposing the stamps with the black background.  The new scans are 1200dpi showing more detail and better color.  Other than straightening and cropping, the scans have not been altered in any way.
