"...PLATE PROOF ON CARD WITH TONING AT CENTER" on back side

This proof stamp was made to ensure that everything was in order with the plates before full-scale printing began. It was printed on card paper. Plate proofs were produced in very small quantities (fewer than 3,000 for most early stamps). And Proof stamps are available for a fraction of the cost of the regular stamp.

Why stamp #43 was reprinted: The Post Office Department requested the stamp in order to have a complete set of all US stamps to showcase at the first world’s fair – the Centennial International Exposition of 1876, held in Philadelphia. Postal authorities also wanted to be able to fulfill collectors’ and other requests for the early issues. This stamp is a reprint of stamp #31, a Type 1 stamp from the Series of 1857-61.
