The vignette was excised out and re-inserted to create the 'invert.' while the stamp legitimately went through the mail and paid the correct rate, due to its altered nature, it might be considered an illegal usage. Loewry was known for magic and it is likely that he sent this cover to himself as the address is in his own hand. He also was a stamp and postcard collector and certainly would have know about the inverts. Perhaps this cover was a prop loewry used to preform a magic trick at his local stamp club. Quite scarce in its own right! According to magicpedia: prof. Morris loewy (1857-1933), also spelled lowey, was an expert in cards and friend of clinton burgess who immigrated to the united states in 1889. He was the creator of the "loewy palm" which was published in greater magic as "the top card with left hand only". He was a member of the national conjurors association and the ibm ( member no. 921.) prof. Loewy attended the ibm convention in 1927. The "professor" title was probably self-bestowed and he advertised himself as an "expert in card performances and theatrical entertainments". Loewy also collected stamps and post cards.[1] he died of heart failure in 1933.[2] sent 1901, opened cleanly at left, light general wear & toning. Very fine condition.
