Description
_USA 5c Washington stamp tied by April 2, 1918 Mountain Station Philadelphia, Pennsylvania machine cancel and upside down 'UNCLAIMED' Returned to Sender pointing finger handstamp. Also, 'Return To Writer' and 'Deceased Verified By Statistical Division H.A.E.F.' auxiliary markings. The cover with lengthy letter was sent to A.E.F. Corporal Prescott W. Gould of the 102nd Machine Gun Battalion in France. Undeliverable due to Gould's death and forwarded to Newton Upper Falls, Massachusetts (Gould's town of residence) where received unclaimed and return to sender, presumably backl to the original sender in Pennsylvania. Prescot Wilder Gould (1894-1918) enlisted in the US Army in 1915 and served on The Mexican Border prior to the US entry into WW1. He was sent over to France in 1917 and was promoted to Sergeant in April 1918. Gould died from 'disease' (possibly due to a German poison gas attack during the April 20th Battle of Seicheprey - the AEF's first battle) on May 16, 1918 at a base hospital in France. Includes original hand written letter from family friend Ilse Keppelmann who addresses Gould by his nickanme 'Pecker' and also includes the soon to be prescient sentiment 'It seems awful to be over here enjoying life when there is so much suffering in France.'
