Item Description
The French postal system of the 19th Century used numeric cancellations to indicate the source of mail. Each village and town had their own respective numeric identifier and that same system was applied to French Post Offices operating in Turkey (Levant) before the official overprints began in mid-1884.From 1857 to 1884, contemporary French postage stamps were used and cancelled with duplex postmarks bearing a number affiliated with each specific French Post Office, and in some instances smaller CDS strikes. The numbers were in two sizes and simply noted as large or small. The postmark adorning this stamp is a diamond grid with the large "5093" assigned to the Smyrna (today's Izmir, Turkey) post office. Those Turkish Empire (Levant) cancellations on standard pre-overprint issues command a substantial premium.
The French cancellations are striking in their intricate grid star (and diamonds for some) design with the larger/smaller number contained within.

Most, if not all stamps (especially 19th Century issues) listed are dipped and checked for faults, and reviewed under a digital microscope and a high-powered UV light to verify no faults. Stamps also researched within an extensive philatelic reference library.
