Item Description

The French Postal System of the 19th Century used numeric cancellations to indicate the source of mail. Each village and town had their own respective numeric identifier though the number 6316 was in use by Lyon (Les Terreaux), France. The French cancellations are striking in their intricate grid diamond (and stars for some) design with the larger number contained within. The bold cancellation is the focus of this auction.
