Vintage Circa 1910–1920 Germany Poster Stamp Unionsbräu Brewery Of Munich Artist Julius Ussy Engelhard (1883–1964) Unused No Gum This Cheerful German Advertising Poster Stamp Promotes The Unionsbräu Brewery Of Munich, A Noted Local Beer Producer Active In The Early Twentieth Century. The Lively Illustration Depicts A Blond Bavarian Boy In Traditional Lederhosen, Red Suspenders, And White Shirt, Gleefully Carrying A Serving Tray With Two Bottles Of Beer And Two Glasses. His Animated Pose Suggests Movement And Festivity, With A Flowing White Napkin Tied Around His Neck Like A Scarf. The Background Presents A Stylized Munich Skyline Silhouetted Against A Blue Sky Patterned With Soft Cloud Motifs, While The Foreground Features A Checkerboard Floor In Black And Green. Below The Scene, The Company Name “Unionsbräu München” Appears In Bold Blackletter Script, A Classic Typeface Associated With German Brewing Tradition. The Artist’s Signature “E. Tautenhayn” Appears At Upper Right, And The Printer’s Credit “Consée, München” Runs Along The Lower Margin. This Stamp Captures The Spirited Folk Charm And Graphic Playfulness Of Bavarian Beer Advertising From The 1910s–1920s. The Example Is Clean With No Visible Flaws. Visible Text: German: Unionsbräu München Consée München. English Translation: Unionsbräu Munich Consée Munich. Country Of Origin: Germany. Date Of Issue: Circa 1910–1920. Year Of Issue: Circa 1910–1920.Some Interesting History:Born In 1854 In Thalmässing, Franconia, Josef Schülein Was The Son Of The Cloth Merchant Joel And His Wife Nette, A Devout Jewish Mother Who Maintained A Kosher Household, Raised Her Children In The Jewish Tradition, And Supported The Family Through Small, Well-Managed Loans After Her Husband’s Death. She Eventually Moved With Her Four Children, Including Josef, To Munich, Following Her Eldest Son Jakob. Josef, Who Arrived In Munich In 1873, Initially Worked In Banking Alongside His Brothers Jakob And Gustav, But His Ambition Soon Led Him Elsewhere. In 1885 He Purchased The Bankrupt Fügerbräu Brewery In The Haidhausen District, Transforming It Into The Thriving Unionsbrauerei Schülein Und Companie, Later Converted Into A Stock Corporation In 1903. A Businessman Rather Than A Brewer, Schülein Relied On Skilled Experts To Produce His Beer, Expanding His Enterprise With The Acquisition Of The Münchner-Kindl Brewery In 1905 And, Following The First World War, Kaltenberg Castle With Its Brewery And Agricultural Estate, Which He Managed With His Youngest Son Fritz. Married To Ida Baer Of Oberdorf, Josef Enjoyed A Happy Family Life With Their Six Children. Under His Leadership, Unionsbräu Merged With Löwenbräu In 1921, Retroactive To October 1, 1919, A Merger Engineered By His Son Hermann Schülein, Who Became Director And Later Chairman Of Löwenbräu, Which Soon Also Absorbed The Bürgerliches Brauhaus München. The Schülein Family Was Renowned For Its Philanthropy, Donating Land For A Social Housing Project In Berg Am Laim And Providing Extensive Charitable Aid; Ida Herself Opened Soup Kitchens Serving Up To 1,000 Hungry People Daily In The Münchner-Kindl-Keller And The Bürgerbräu-Keller During The Postwar Hardship. Josef, Known Affectionately As The “Beer King Of Haidhausen” For His Generosity, Distinguished Appearance With His Enormous Mustache And Wide-Brimmed Hat, And His Habit Of Handing Out Coins To Local Children, Also Financed Clothing For Up To Forty Confirmation Candidates Each Year And Sponsored The Education Of Gifted Students. His Community Recognized Him In 1920 By Naming A Street And A Square In His Honor, Though The Nazis Revoked This Tribute In December 1933. That Same Year, The Regime Forced His Resignation From The Löwenbräu Supervisory Board, After Which He Retired To His Kaltenberg Estate Near Geltendorf. Josef Schülein Died There On September 9, 1938, And Was Buried Beside His Wife Ida, Who Had Passed Away In 1929, In The New Israelite Cemetery In Munich. Please Note That Any Discoloration, Lines, Or Marks Visible On The Scan Are From The Acetate Or Protective Page Holding The Stamp During Scanning.
