For Free Gas Masks For The Poor MNH Tiny Black Spot Lower Right SideThis Poster Stamp Was Issued In Hungary By The Légoltalmi Liga (Air Defense League) In Cooperation With The Országos Női Bizottsága (National Women’s Committee) To Raise Funds For Providing Free Gas Masks To The Poor. The Central Image Depicts A Person Wearing A Gas Mask, A Stark And Direct Symbol Of Civilian Protection In An Era When Chemical Warfare Was A Major Concern Following World War I And Leading Into World War II. The Text Informs Donors That Contributions Would Supply Gas Masks Without Charge To Those Unable To Afford Them, With The Value Of The Label Marked As “Két Fillér” (Two Fillér). The numbering can be seen on the forehead of the mask body. The national gas mask set (1 mask body, 1 insert, 1 demisting soap or ointment, instructions for use, all in a carrying case) cost 13 pengő in 1938, packed in a cardboard box instead of a carrying case for 11 pengő. The price of spare filter inserts was 2 pengő 50 fillér. The national gas mask could be purchased at the manufacturer's, Mercur Technical and Chemical Co. Ltd. Andrássy út store or from the company's agents, which could be found in every major city, but it could also be purchased by mail using the order form shown in the pictures below and published in an air defense publication.
