Item Description
Despite their difficulties, the Wright Brothers probably had an easier time flying at Kitty Hawk than YOU will have making the little Wright Flyer in the cachet of this FDC glide gracefully over the North Carolina Dunes!This pull-tab cachet really doesn't work very well (very poor paper engineering on the part of the cachetmaker) but you can see the intent: pulling and pushing the tab at lower right is supposed to make the Wright Flyer soar and - something the Wright Brothers didn't achieve - reverse and fly backwards in mid-air!
Watching the spectacle are a Razorback Hog and some field mice - referred to on the cachet in a quote from a book about that momentous day in 1903.
Along with the invalid cover is an uncut sheet showing how the cover and its several working parts were laid out . . . for a competent hobbyist to craft into a working bit of philately. If you know of one, let me know how I might get in touch!
