Postmark: UMMIE, Kentucky – August 25, 1943 Stamp: 1½¢ brown George Washington definitive (Scott #805). Cachet: Blue patriotic and propaganda design. It features a mock letter home with the heading: “Dear Mom: Today I bagged a Jap plane with your kitchen fats—” The letter explains how saving household fats helped produce glycerin for explosives and gunpowder during WWII. Illustration shows a mother reading the letter in her home, with a service flag in the window. Signed “Love, Joe.” Addressed To: Fred Cochran, Detroit, Michigan. Theme: Home front war effort – encouraging civilians, especially women, to contribute by saving cooking fats for ammunition production.
