Postmark: Washington, D.C. – June 21, 1945.Stamps: 2¢ “Nations United for Victory” stamp (Scott #905, part of the Overrun Countries issue). 1¢ “Four Freedoms” stamp (Scott #908) – showing the torch of liberty and Roosevelt’s “Freedom from Want and Fear.” Cachet (Colorful Event Commemorative): Bold artwork depicting the fierce Battle of Okinawa with tanks, explosions, and U.S. forces pushing forward. Portrait of Lt. Gen. Simon Bolivar Buckner Jr., commander of the 10th U.S. Army, who was killed just days before victory was declared. Text block provides a battle timeline: April 1: 10th U.S. Army & Marines land. May 14: U.S. had suffered 35,126 casualties, the largest number of any Pacific battle. June 21: Admiral Nimitz announces formal capture. Theme & Significance: This cover marks the end of the Battle of Okinawa, the last major battle of WWII and the bloodiest of the Pacific Theater. Its conclusion directly influenced the U.S. decision to use atomic bombs to avoid the projected massive casualties of an invasion of Japan.
