Item Description

China - Tsingtau 青島 (Qīngdǎo) Province, a pair of blue Dr. Sun Yat-sen $1000.00 Gold Yuan series stamps overprinted in May 1949 "Silver Yuan 1 Jiao (Tsingtau)" 銀圓 壹角 (青島). Tsingtau (Tsingtao) is now called Qīngdǎo. One (1) Jiao equals 10¢. Scott's catalogue identifies the stamps as Tsingtau #4 and mistakenly says they are overprinted in red. Michel #4 and other European catalogues say the overprint is violet, as the scans show. The stamps are well centered for the issue.

On 20 August 1948, the Gold Yuan replaced the Chinese National Currency (CNC) at the rate of 1 Gold Yuan for 3,000,000 CNC dollars. In April 1949, the Gold Yuan in turn collapsed and was replaced by the Silver Yuan. Thus, we have the May 1949 Silver Yuan currency 10¢ overprints here for Tsingtau 青島 (Qīngdǎo) Province. The stamps are perf. 14.
