Item Description
United States, Scott #805, used(o), 1938, Prexie: Martha Washington (1731 old calandar -1802) was the wife of George Washington, the first president of the United States; she served as the inaugural 'first lady' of the United States, defining the role of a president's wife and setting many precedents that future first ladies would observe; born Martha Dandridge, she first married Daniel Custis in 1750, and the couple had four children, two of whom survived to adulthood; he was widowed in 1757 at the age of 26, inheriting a large estate; she remarried George Washington in 1759, moving to his plantation at Mount Vernon; Washington took on the social role of the president's wife, becoming a national celebrity in the process; while first Lady, she understood that how she composed herself would reflect on the nation, both domestically and abroad; as such, she struck a careful balance between the dignity associated with a head of state's wife and the humility associated with republican government; she is consistently ranked in the upper half of influential first ladies by historians; 1½ cents, engraved, perforated: 11x10½, bister brown, Scott 2019 Catalog Value: 25¢, very slightly off-centered, series of curved vertical bars cancellation over the main image, sound back, good perforations. This is not a 'bait-and-switch;' the stamp you see will be the one you receive. Please review my terms of sale. If you are not ordering from the United States, there is a $US1.50 additional postage expense that needs to be added to the price of the stamp. If you are ordering from the United States, there is only a $US0.66 added postage expense. Also, if you make additional purchases from my offerings, they can all go in one mailing at no extra shipping expense for the added purchases. I will send the purchase by US first class mail, since the relatively low value of the stamp does not warrant signature or tracking mail. Hence the buyer assumes risk of loss or non-delivery. I will keep a scan of my mailing to verify that the correct mailing address was used.
By way of reference, I am an American Philatelic Society member (195176) and an American Stamp Dealers Association (ASDA) member. Thank you for looking, and I hope this is the perfect stamp to fill that gap in your collection.
