Please. Please. Please.

When you ship stamps to who ever buys them please include the stamp Scott number. The name of your company on hip stamp. Something. Really anything that I can use to determine which of the 10 stamps I just bought. Please.

  • So some "seller" on HS just sticks the ordered items in an envelope and mails them without an invoice/statement at least or anything else???? That seems a little bit more than lazy to me.

Wow, what a concept. Imagine all the time we could save, as well as paper. Hmmmmmmmm

    Feeling a little sarcastic.
  • I've had the same experience, more than once. It is aggravating. Especially when your ten orders are spread over 5 possible selling sites.
  • Thinking about it a bit more....I might (would) consider sending it back for a refund...period. And never order from them again. Whatever the item is (with notable exceptions) can be had from quality dealers elsewhere on HS and other places. Just me but that's my 2c on it.
  • This "business concept" is alive and well on the Bay, also. Yesterday I received a really spiffy Pumpkin Head Cancel on cover that I won in auction. It came in a nice plastic sleeve with nothing else in the envelope it came in. I put it on my desk and returned to admire it later. As I started to lift it out of the sleeve, I suddenly noticed that behind my cover sat a small lady's cover from the 1860's with a couple of nice stamps on it. The first thing that came to mind was 'merde! I'm going to have to mail it back to the sender, so I contacted him via eBay to let him know (in case he was looking for it). All I got back was the single word 'bonus.' So I thanked the dude, but still, 15-seconds to jot a short note in the first place gonna kill ya??
  • They were not expensive items. Which is probably why the sellers were so sloppy. I have found that here, as in life in general, that quality improves as the price goes up.
  • My dear friends. This is a business. When you sell something, give your customer an account of the transaction. DUH! When you buy a six-pack at the convenience store, they will give you a receipt. What is your problem?
  • Bob, with all due respect, I disagree. I, and many dealers I know, ship orders the same way no matter what the price. This is just pure and simple laziness and certainly not a quality professional dealer.
  • Sometimes it ain't even laziness. Twice I have ordered from a dealer who does not provide a receipt, but he packs the stamps in a multi-layered construction of cardboard and tape that requires an x-acto blade to get the stamps out safely, with a scribbled thank you note. I don't like ordering from him.
  • There's that too.
  • In all of my years I have always sent items out with an invoice. It is really stupid not to do that since a customer possible is buying many things and you have to let them know who, what and where the items in the envelope came from.
I learned this many, many years ago when I was selling at bourses, I would always give the buyer an envelope, the 102's etc. with the catalog numbers and my business card. They then new where they got it and how to contact me if they later had a problem or wanted to buy more. It's good salesmanship.
  • Greg. You misunderstood me. It is the question of the people that improves with price. More expensive items are only handled by certain dealers. And they do a better job. Less expensive items are handled by completely different people. And they do a much worse job of it.
  • All due respect I will disagree. Whether I have a $2 order or a $100 both get shipped with due care. My customers deserve that service and many have come back because they like being treated fairly.

well i don't mind .. as long as the item arrives. But.. please don't tightly wrap the item in indestructable Tape! :-) some these people must have been egyptian embalmers in previous lives! (teasing) tape has NO Place inside a stamp order and is totally not needed.
  • I received a lot last week that was packaged in several glassiness, and each of them were taped to something else. Lost a few stamps trying to extract them. Fortunately, very minor value.

I do want say that as a relatively new dealer, I don't include any invoice. I write "Thankyou", and have a return name and address label on the envelope. It never entered my mind to include a receipt. Learn something new every day.
  • John, as long as you are new to selling another tip I picked up from the group, include Hip Stamp and the invoice number. Many of the buyers shop across the board and having that little bit of information helps them it know where to look for what they bought.
  • "So some "seller" on HS just sticks the ordered items in an envelope and mails them without an invoice/statement at least or anything else???? That seems a little bit more than lazy to me."

It happens all the time on all selling platforms. I agree it is amateurish for a seller to not include a packing slip. Just print the invoice from the order details page. Don't be a cheapo with your buyers.

Why should a seller add an invoice to the shipment?

1 - adds some additional protection to the stamps, especially if you use a thicker paper.

2 - if the mailing label falls off the envelope, or the writing gets smudged from whatever, the post office will open the envelope to try to find the delivery or sender's address so that delivery can be completed, or returned to sender. If there is no shipping slip, then the envelope will go to the Dead Letter Office, and the buyer will file a non-receipt complaint with PayPal, and guess what?
  • I send an email out when I ship an order, and print the email to use as a packing slip. It is fairly easy to prepare the email using cut & paste. I also enclose a copy of my current snail mail pricelist. The stamps are normally placed in a return envelope with my address on it. I try to make it easy for the buyer to buy more from me.The pricelist and packing slip provide more protection for the stamps, and I try to use all of the weight I am paying for with a stamp, ie if the postage to the US is $1.30 for up to 30 grams I want my mailing to weigh 29 grams.
